Proton Center

Proton Center Introduction

Shandong Proton Center is one part of Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute, Shandong First Medical University, who provides radiotherapy services to cancer patients in the eastern region of China and other province. It located at 2999 Yantai Avenue, Jinan, Shandong Province, China, serving as a “No.1 Project”, "Ignition Project" within the Jinan International Medical Science Center. With a total investment of 1.47 billion yuan, spanning 60 acres and boasting a total floor area of 88,000 square meters across 21 floors, including 300 beds, this state-of-the-art facility comprises seven specialized centers. Among them are the Sino-Japanese-Korean Cancer Research Institute and the Radiation Immunology Research Center, alongside facilities dedicated to talent cultivation, training, international conferences and so on.

Commencing construction on July 18, 2018, the Shandong Proton Center transitioned swiftly from application submission to ground-breaking, achieving this milestone in a mere 132 days—a testament to turning dreams into tangible realities. In 2019, it clinched the first place nationwide for proton equipment configuration certification. Fast forward to April 1, 2021, when the Proton Center was officially inaugurated, marking a remarkable journey from construction initiation to operational readiness in just two and a half years. Demonstrating unprecedented efficiency, the proton therapy system passed national proton equipment radiation safety license in record time and received official approval from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on July 6, 2022—a feat hailed by industry insiders as "a miracle beyond imagination." By November 1, 2023, it had obtained the National Medical Device Registration Certificate, paving the way for its formal clinical debut and the construction speed created "The World's Greatest ". It is the first approved proton therapy system to employ superconducting cyclotron technology and a 360-degree rotating gantry. The proton therapy system can achieve multi-angle therapy and effectively shorten the treatment time of patients, under the premise of ensuring the treatment effect of patients. It has become a major tool to relieve the pain of tumor patients, so that people can be served by the most advanced international radiotherapy technology at their doorstep. Since Nov.20th 2023 to Mar.20th 2024, 240 patients have been treated by proton system during this 4 months. There are about more than 80 patients will be treated per day in three gantry rooms.

Presently, the heavy ion neutron project of the second phase of the Proton Center is also rapidly advancing, continuing to be co-built and shared by provinces and cities, and heavy ion equipment has approved configuration certificate. The heavy ion neutron project has completed bidding and procurement and advance payment. With the construction of the heavy ion project, Shandong Cancer Hospital will become the only hospital internationally with proton and heavy ion two sets of treatment systems. We will be based in Shandong, lead the country and face Northeast Asia, enable cancer patients inside and outside the province can enjoy the highest international tumor treatment technology and higher quality, higher level and higher standards of medical services at home. At the same time, with the help of protons, heavy ions and neutrons, we will take the lead in building the world's top tumor radiotherapy center and achieve the ambitious goal of international leadership in radiotherapy discipline within five years.
